What to Expect

When will you be contacting my references?

Confidentiality is our number one priority! We will wait to contact your references until we have discussed that with you personally, and we never contact your current employer without your express permission. We require the names and contact information (email and/or phone) for at least two individuals who have supervised you. 


Acceptable options:

  • Direct supervisors from current or past employment
  • Internship supervisors
  • Self-employment customer contacts (childcare, odd jobs, etc.)
  • Volunteer work supervisors/organizers

We cannot use:

  • Relatives (even if they meet any of the criteria above)
  • Co-workers
  • Professors/teachers (unless you worked for them outside of class)


Please note: If you are coming in for an update interview, we may only require one updated reference. Executive-level applicants meet certain exemptions for the supervisory criteria because they are without those types of contacts. The manager who interviews you can confirm if you qualify for that exemption during your meeting. 

Something came up, can I reschedule?

You certainly can! We understand that things pop up unexpectedly so just email, call, or text us to let us know. We always appreciate the notification, because the managers plan their day around your visit, so if you are unable to attend the appointment and do not take the time to cancel they may be reluctant to reschedule. 

FAQs

Will I be meeting with the company that is hiring?

Unless we have an internal vacancy, no. We are hired by employers to conduct initial interviews and then determine who is most qualified for each opening. We are unable to determine that until we have met with each candidate. 

Why me?

We only interview a percentage of the applicants who apply at Career Connections. We advanced you to this phase because we feel it is worthwhile for you because of one or both of the following situations:

  • Based on your preferences and qualifications, the managers believe you will be a strong candidate for the types of jobs we frequently fill.
  • You are among the most qualified candidates for a current open search.

What should I wear?

We ask that you dress appropriately for the types of positions you are applying for.

How long should I expect to be there?

This depends on what paperwork you complete from home prior to the interview. The paperwork portion can be completed ahead of time through our online application tool (there is a link to the online application in your interview confirmation email). If you complete all paperwork beforehand, when you come in you will have to complete a general aptitude assessment, the interview meeting, and, depending on the type of work you are applying for, you may also be asked to complete additional assessment testing. The interview plus the assessments can take from one to two hours to complete. 

Will I be doing any testing?

It depends on the type of work you are applying for. Applicants interested in administrative/clerical, customer service, human services, warehouse, general labor, and similar fields will be asked to take a short written assessment that evaluates general aptitude categories (spelling, vocabulary, attention to detail, and basic math). Those applying for clerical roles are also strongly encouraged to take a typing test and computer assessments to judge and evaluate software knowledge (e.g., general MS Word, MS Excel, etc.).
