Our History

In order to provide the best service to employers and job seekers, we believe that it is important to support and be active in our communities. We are locally-owned, locally operated, and at both of our offices we hire local employees to be able to be fully present and active in local events, organizations, and initiatives. About Career Connections

Going from two administrative staff members and a whopping eight temporary placements in 1990 to our current status of 12 administrative staff members and several hundred temporary and direct-hires per year has been an often challenging but always gratifying experience. We attribute our success to a strong belief in the importance of positive customer service, the application of careful screening procedures, the advantage of being locally owned and operated, our staff’s dedication to actively serving our local communities, and having direct access to the best staffing service in the area, which has helped us to build the most outstanding administrative staff possible.

Our mission is to provide meaningful and productive connections between employers and job seekers. We don’t place warm bodies in positions; instead, we strive to learn the goals, aspirations, and preferences of our job seekers and the unique requirements, philosophies, and culture of our employers/clients in order to make connections that mutually benefit both parties. It is our hope that through our efforts we can help both the job seeker and employer attain their greatest potential. 

Our Mission

Career Connections grew out of the struggles with staffing that owner, president, and Athens, Ohio, local Valerie Kinnard faced as a small business owner. Back in the late ‘80s, before computers were a common household appliance, Valerie owned and operated a word-processing service called WordTech, which catered primarily to the academic community in Athens. Her workflow was considerably affected by the larger number of orders she’d receive at the end of each academic quarter, and she often needed temporary help. The problem was, there was no local staffing agency to help her.

Career Connections has relocated our Athens office several times, including spaces on West Union Street, Elliott Street, and Richland Avenue, and we are currently located in a large office on East State Street, where we hope to continue growing without having to move again. In 2013, we also opened a branch office in Gallipolis, and we have plans to open additional offices in other communities in Southeast Ohio to better serve our clients through our concentrated local recruiting efforts.

So, confident that she could help herself and other area employers who also needed local staffing services, she decided to take the leap and start the business herself. Originally named WordTech Temporaries and sharing a storefront in uptown Athens with the word-processing service, the fledgling company dealt primarily in clerical temporaries.  As the only staffing service in the area, Valerie wanted to be able to provide comprehensive staffing services to meet all of her clients’ needs, so after a few years she sold the original word-processing company, renamed the staffing business Career Connections, introduced the concept of direct-hire placements, and expanded into staffing additional positions as the demand arose from local employers.
