HAVAR’s mission is to connect people – with and without disabilities – in supportive and inclusive communities. In serving individuals with developmental delays in the Athens community, they provide many services, including in-home support, service coordination, day services through the Building Bridges Adult Center, Autism resources, futures planning, children services, and supported community employment. What has been your most rewarding experience working as a direct support professional?
I enjoy working with people, helping them figure out how and when to do things, and helping them through their day.

What’s your favorite part about your job? Working at Building Bridges with 5-8 to consumers at a time, and figuring out ways of incorporating activities that every likes to do and getting them all to do them together. 

What advice would you give to someone considering DSP work/someone who has just accepted a position with Havar?
That they be a kind, caring, compassionate person.

If you are looking for direct support professional (DSP) work, here's your opportunity to make a difference! In acting as the exclusive staffing service provider for HAVAR, Career Connections receives all applications for HAVAR openings and thoroughly screens all applicants before sending applicant information over to HAVAR representatives to review and decide if they would like to interview the applicant. CC mostly fills direct support professional (DSP) positions for HAVAR, and all placements with HAVAR are direct-hire, so should HAVAR decide to hire you, you will be on their payroll from Day 1. 

  • Be able to lift 50 lbs.

Feeling a sense of giving, and feeling an emotional connection with people I may not have ordinarily met in my lifetime. I enjoy lifting people’s spirits and feel great about what I am doing to help others.

What’s your favorite part about your job? When clients say “Thank you, you’re my buddy” and let me know they appreciate me.

What advice would you give to someone considering DSP work/someone who has just accepted a position with Havar?
Sometimes it feels mundane, but don’t forget why you’re doing what you’re doing. Sometimes it’s the little things that matter the most, so don’t forget to appreciate even the smallest things.
